Belinda Sellars

Belinda has been a litigator for 20 years and has been practising as a barrister sole since 2009.

Belinda’s practice largely consists of criminal defence work. She is also experienced in health & safety, competition law and fair trading litigation as well as Parole Board applications. She appears in a full range of criminal matters (both summary and indictable) in the various primary and appellate courts in New Zealand. Belinda has also been admitted to the Bar in Samoa and has appeared in that jurisdiction.

Belinda has been involved in a wide variety of significant criminal proceedings, including:

  • a successful application for the Prerogative of Mercy that resulted in convictions being quashed by the Court of Appeal
  • trials involving allegations of homicide & serious assault, sexual violation & indecent assault, drug dealing, drug manufacture & money laundering, child abuse and fraud
  • matters involving mental health issues
  • criminal matters involving traffic and dishonesty offences
  • applications for discharge without conviction

Belinda speaks conversational French and often assists French speaking clients.

Belinda is legal aid approved for all categories in criminal proceedings, including matters in the Court of Appeal and Supreme Court.
